Yoga Holidays

To the best of my knowledge no one has ever done yoga holidays to South Africa – until I took a group of my students to Franschhoek in the Western Cape in 2005.

I am planning to do one yoga holiday to Franschhoek, South Africa around Easter and one in France in September each year.

In order to get the most out of the week's workshop, you must be reasonably fit, flexible and practice yoga frequently.

Yoga Holiday in South Africa

Two classes are held daily at 7-8.30am and around 5-7pm leaving the rest of the day free for other activities.  You do not have to attend all the classes, but you will find it more beneficial if you do.  The week’s teaching will be planned to progressively improve your existing postures and introduce you to new ones.

If the group agrees, one early morning class will be skipped for a trip to Cape Town and up Table Mountain before the ‘table cloth’ descends and obscures the fantastic view of the city below and the whole Cape Peninsula.

Take your own yoga mat, belt, five lightweight yoga blocks, two yoga bricks and a towel to use for support in some poses.  Yoga equipment is available from me at discounted prices prior to departure.Franchoek

About the Location

Franschhoek is a new location for yoga holidays. With its many vineyards it is really beautiful, quiet, relatively unspoilt and inexpensive compared to Cape Town.  It also has many wonderful restaurants catering for all tastes and price ranges.  The attractions of Cape Town and Table Mountain are just an hour away by car.

You can also extend your stay and tour the breathtaking and world famous Garden Route in the Western Cape.  An excellent travel agent in Cape Town, www.africanpathfinder.com which specialises in these tours, can advise you and arrange all your bookings.

More about Franschhoek

The SA wine industry was started by the French Huguenots who fled to the Cape from persecution in France.  Franschhoek literally means “French corner”.  Apart from wine tasting and the gastronomic delights, there is golf, tennis, fishing, horse riding, orienteering, trekking, hang-gliding, white water rafting, bird watching, exploring the history, culture, arts & crafts, pottery, antiques, and whale watching - the latter only August to October.

Bo la Motte, a small working vineyard, is the base for the week’s yoga and is just ten minutes walk from the shops and restaurants in Franschhoek.  It is owned and run very informally by a young couple, Maarten, a South African, and Jenni, an English rose.  They have two small children.

They have several very homely and comfortable self-catering cottages of rustic elegance in character.  Each has a fully equipped kitchens, lounge/dining areas and television.  All bed linen and towels are supplied.  Laundry services are available at a small cost extra.

You also have free use of the farm swimming pool and dam.  Credit cards are accepted.

Example of Costs and Prices of South African Holidays

As an indication of the potential cost, the first group’s outlay for self catering accommodation (sharing a room), all food, including eating out five nights of the seven at some of the best restaurants in the world, plus a quarter share of all car hire expenses and a trip to Cape Town and Table Mountain, came to less than £36 per day at £1/R10.75.

The cost of the week’s teaching is £230 per person.
